Character interview: Darren – “Amador Lockdown”
In the world of books, the characters can be just as important – if not more so? – than the creator. Therefore, I’m welcoming characters to Book Bags and Cat Naps to introduce themselves, spill the beans about their makers and tell us what lies ahead…
Today I’m welcoming Darren – from Coral Russell’s title Amador Lockdown - to the blog
[sws_blue_box box] About the book
“You always save the best lies for yourself.” – Amador Lockdown
Something has moved into the Amador Hotel. Hector, Marcos, Bev, and Tony of the Paranormal Posse are called in to either debunk the haunting or get rid of whatever is causing the problems. With the surprise arrival of Hector’s son, he tries to keep his professional and personal lives separate, but whatever is haunting the Amador Hotel has other plans.

Welcome! Please introduce yourself…
Darren and I’ve had a screwed up life so far. My parents are divorced. I lived with my mom and stepdad until they had me committed claiming I was ‘out of control’ just because I got into a big fight with my stepdad. So my mom thinks it would be easier to dump me on my real father. Haven’t spoken with him in a long time and I don’t want to. I’m just waiting for my chance…
Spill the beans…
The creator/character relationship could be described as a give and take one. Who is the taker and who is the giver in your relationship?
I’m the giver. Coral is learning a lot about my frustrations, goals, and thinking. She’s just soaked that all in and written it down.
How much is Amador Lockdown?
$0.99
And, if you could spend the Amador Lockdown royalties on a treat, what would it be?
Skateboards and accessories
Assuming the tables were turned and you became the author, what story would you cast your creator turned character in?
She’s impossibly boring! She’s just like my dad who says he only wants what’s best for me, but it’s all bull. I should be allowed to do what I want with my life. Even if she thinks I’m just screwing it up. It’s my life to screw up.
Tell us something about your creator that they’re unlikely to share themselves?
She’s a freakin’ open book. She says exactly what’s on her mind and I have a hard time because I haven’t caught her in a lie or something else I could use against her.
Character/creator comparison
Tell us one of your bad habits
Lying, but it’s just to get what I want.
Tell us one of your creator’s bad habits
Other than being a nagging, self-righteous, pain in the …, not much.
If you lived in the same world as your creator, would you be likely to move in the same circles?
I guess she’d have to live close since she’s made me part of her family, but I’d probably be gone as soon as I was old enough to get away with it.
Now here’s a quickfire comparison round: your favourites (D) and hers (C)
Darren’s favourites: Dr. Pepper, lasagna, flan, tres leches cake, and bean burritos. I’m going to be a pro-skater so I don’t need to worry about anything else.
Coral’s favourites: Food, family, friends, good books, classic movies, and yellow.
And now the moment of truth: review Coral Russell’s book
I guess it’s all right. I get to skate and rap in it and check out what ghost hunting is all about. But the ending sucks! At least for me… well and maybe my dad. I want to make it clear I had no idea that was going to happen in the end. Especially to me.
Will we see you again? Any last words?
Technically, I guess I have to hang out until she decides what she wants to do with me. I’m not sure if I want to be seen again, but let’s just say I was too young for it to go down like it did.
