Mrs B and I first discovered Flight of the Conchords in late 2009 when my wife received a box set for Christmas. Entering 2010 we immediately indulged ourselves with the adventures of the New Zealand folk duo, Jemaine (Jemaine Clement) and Bret (Bret McKenzie), who are in New York trying to win an American audience after limited success back home i.e. the second most popular folk group in New Zealand. It took about two episodes but we were soon hooked and looking back now just over a year later it seemed an appropriate time to share our ten favourite Flight of the Conchords songs. If you’ve never seen the show you are in for a treat my friends.
3) Brett, You Got It Going On (Series 1 – Episode 6: Bowie)
In this episode Murray (Rhys Darby) has found a company that want to use one of the band’s songs in a musical greeting card. Their efforts are hampered by Bret (Bret McKenzie) who begins to have a confidence crisis about his body after a remark from Murray. In a series of dreams Bret is visited by David Bowie in different guises from his career and he offers Bret help with his self-esteem. Jemaine (Jemaine Clement) also tries to boost his friend’s confidence and the only way he feels he can inspire Bret is through song. Taking up a guitar and singing solo Jemaine gives us the brilliant but very worrying “Bret, You Got It Going On.”

Jemaine’s insistence that this song is in no way gay is the most amusing aspect. Even in the midst of the lyrics he reasons that it isn’t gay for a man to praise a male friend just as long as it isn’t all the time. Bret seems happy with what he is hearing early on but once Jemaine makes references to putting a wig on Bret things start to take a worrying turn. Even after the song is over and Bret is reading the lyrics back Jermaine doesn’t see how any of it is gay. I’ve noticed some comments on YouTube from men saying they sing this to their friends just to wind them up. It’s a bizarre but hilarious song.
Mrs B says:
Aww Bret. Unlucky in life, unlucky in love. Still, at least he’s always got Jemaine to stand by him. Reliable, steadfast, dependable Jemaine. Oh and did I mention slightly stalker-like at times? It’s one thing to attempt to cheer a friend up but quite another to admit to using a wig to increase your (male) best friend’s feminine allure. Still, I always thought there was chemistry between those two: this is just another manifestation of it.
